Originally released in ’68 – the year Mexico hosted the XIX Olympiad – the adidas Mexicana celebrated Mexico’s rich history and sporting culture, with the country going on to host the world cup 2 years later and once more in 1986. These 2022 editions revive a truly classic adidas design. Taking design notes from vintage pairs made under license in Yugoslavia & West Germany, the results are a faithful reproduction that incorporates key archive details to create a fitting 2022 edition to sit alongside its predecessors.
If anyone knows about celebrations, it’s Mexico. The adidas Mexicana shoes were originally released in 1968 when all eyes were on the vibrant country, and now they return to honour Dia de los Muertos, one of the country’s oldest traditions. The black upper represents death itself, and the off-white sole mimics the colour of bones. A marigold signs it off, por supuesto.
